Agave ovatifolia ‘Vanzie,’ also known as “Whale’s Tongue Agave,” is a striking succulent perfect for UK gardens. This drought-tolerant plant forms a large, dense rosette with broad, powdery blue-grey leaves featuring wavy edges, reaching up to 1.5 metres in height and slightly more in width. The soft spines along its thick, fleshy leaves make it a safer choice for garden use.
Ideal for full sun and well-drained soil, it’s great for rock gardens, Mediterranean landscapes, or containers. Hardy to around -9°C, it needs to be kept very dry in winter in order to cope with the cold. In colder areas it is better to grow it in a container and bring undercover in hard frosts. Its impressive, architectural form makes Agave ovatifolia ‘Vanzie’ a stunning garden focal point.
